These Are The Creepiest, Most Haunted Places In New Hampshire

What's the scariest, most haunted place in the Granite State? Thrillist, Business Insider, Forbes, and HGTV have some thoughts.

NEW HAMPSHIRE — Haunted houses around the neighborhood are great Halloween fun for impressionable children, but in New Hampshire, if you are seeking an authentic scare, you might want to check out the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods.

That’s according to Thrillist, a travel and entertainment media outlet that recently released its list of the 50 (one for each state) most haunted, scariest places in America. Other media outlets have also compiled a list of creepy, haunted places in the Granite State, showing no shortage of places to scare the daylights out of you.

Of Omni Mount Washington Resort, the Thrillist editors said:

The tale of Carolyn Stickney sounds like the worst Disney princess story ever: She married the hotel's founder, who died right before construction was completed. She then remarried into European royalty, but alas, she too passed soon after. She never checked out of Mount Washington, though; she appears in people’s photos as a hazy apparition, floats around the hallways, and is a regular fixture in room 314, apparently her favorite place to challenge the notion of five-star accommodations. The four-poster bed she slept in remains in the room, where you can still hear her voice, some say.

Business Insider says the Alton Town Hall is the most haunted in New Hampshire.

This historic government building in Alton, New Hampshire, is not only a beautiful landmark, it is also the site of reported paranormal activity, New Hampshire Magazine reported in 2020.
Locals have reported seeing furniture that moves, doors that open and close on their own, and hearing mysterious voices.

HGTV agrees with Thrillist:

The Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods was built in 1902 by businessman Joseph Stickney, who died the following year. His widow, Carolyn, is believed to haunt the property to this day. Hotel staff have reportedly spotted her descending the stairs for dinner and have also noticed lights inexplicably turning on and off in one of the towers. Room 314, where her four-poster maple bed still resides, is the best place to see her; guests have reported waking up to find a woman sitting at the end of the bed, slowly brushing her hair.

While Forbes says:

In Henniker, the Ocean-Born Mary House blurs the line between myth and reality. Mary, whose life was once spared by a pirate she’d later marry, is believed to haunt her abode. A towering red-haired spirit with piercing green eyes, believed to be Mary herself, is often spotted near the bay windows and central staircase.
