Thousands Without Power After Thunderstorms, Hail Hit Concord, Capital Region

More than 2,100 Unitil customers were without power on Thursday due to storms that swept through the region; 500 are out in Nottingham.

CONCORD, NH — A wide swath of intense thunderstorms with rain and hail moved throughout Concord and the capital region on Thursday afternoon, knocking out power for thousands of customers.

Hail about the size of grapes and a deluge of rainfall were reported during the height of the storm.

Around 2:30 p.m., Unitil reported nearly 2,100 customers without power, mainly in Concord. About a dozen customers in Canterbury and Danville are also without power, with restoration expected sometime before 4:30 p.m.

There is no restoration time on the Concord outages.

Most of the outages are centered around the West End, North End, and West Concord, although some are also in Penacook. According to scanner chatter, traffic lights on North State Street and North Main Street are not working. Police are being sent to Interstate 393, Bouton Street, and North Main Street to deal with drivers who are not stopping.

Concord and capital region fire and rescue teams were sent to Evergreen Drive in Bow for a report of a lightning strike and smoke inside a home. Just before 3 p.m., mutual aid cleared from the home.

Firefighters are also on North Pembroke Road in Pembroke for a report of trees and wires down.

Eversource reports about 500 customers in Nottingham who are without power, as well as 200 in Raymond.

Some parts of Concord had power restored around 3:15 p.m.
