VIDEO: The Red and Gold Drops Gas Prices

Convenience store on Pleasant Street closing, selling regular for $3.19, cash only.

Darrin Faraj tried to make a go of it but it didn’t quite work out like he planned.

The owner of the Red and Gold on Pleasant Street, a convenience store across from Concord High School, is closing the store’s doors and selling off its inventory.

Faraj surprised commuters this week by dropping the price of regular gas to $3.19, cash only, and a regular stream of customers have been filling their tanks every since. Concord residents haven’t seen gas this cheap in three years, according GasBuddy.com. Faraj will be running the special until the tanks are dry, he said.

Faraj bought the store in June 2011 but has decided to return to the landscaping business, his first business, something he did for more than five years previously.

“I put in a lot to the store and I’m sorry it didn’t work out,” he said. “And I had some really good customers … that’s the sad part. I’m going to miss them. It’s kinda bittersweet.”

Inside the store, Faraj is running discounts on all the merchandise, including some buy one, get one free item. He said he has had a couple of nibbles on potential buyers but the deals never came together so he decided to close the store. Interested buyers can call him at 603-858-0585.

According to the city’s assessing database, Cumberland Farms in Framingham, Mass., owns the property. A message was left with their public relations department requesting comment about what future plans they may have for the property.
