Zerba: October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

The Pope Memorial SPCA here in Concord is a wonderful place to start.

October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! Please join me in spending this month—and every month—celebrating the many charms of shelter animals.

Sadly, over 5 million companion animals enter our nation’s shelters every year, many of those animals do not make it out and are euthanized. I truly believe that if more people were aware of the plight of homeless animals, that more of us would be willing to adopt a pet from their local shelter. The Pope Memorial SPCA here in Concord is a wonderful place to start. The brand new facility is home to many dogs, cats and other animals, just waiting for their forever home. Please remember, shelter pets are NOT broken pets, they are healthy, loving, family-oriented animals who for one reason or another, were neglected, abandoned or simply given up by their owners. Many have never felt the love of a human or lived in a safe home before. My family and I have always adopted our family pets from a shelter or rescue group. These animals are a wonderful choice if you are looking for a new pet for your family and adoption counselors can help you find your fur-friend and match a pet with your family’s lifestyle.

Volunteering at your local shelter is a great way to make a difference in the lives of shelter animals. Volunteers can take dogs for walks, socialize cats and kittens, make the rounds during meal times, or just offer a friendly face for attention. Rescue organizations are always in need of supplies; gather up gently used blankets, towels and toys from friends and family to donate.

With so many healthy, loving animals in need of a home, it is up to us to make a difference. As responsible pet owners, we have the power to reduce these staggering statistics by adopting, spaying and neutering our pets. I urge animal lovers across the country to commemorate Adopt A Shelter Dog Month by helping to raise awareness for homeless animals. Please opt to adopt a shelter pet!
