After 2-State Chase, Mass. Man Arrested on Stolen SUV, DUI Charges In New Hampshire

EPPING, NH — A Massachusetts man was arrested and held on preventative detention on Tuesday after a two-state police chase.

Around 9:30 p.m., New Hampshire State Police received a report about a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder that fled from police after a speeding violation in Newton. The SUV then crossed over the border into Amesbury, MA. Mass. State Police, as well as local police, became involved in the chase, according to state police. At just before 10 p.m., the Nissan crossed back over the border into New Hampshire, on Interstate 95 north, and state police learned that the SUV was stolen out of Cambridge, MA.

“Through further investigation,” Lt. Keith Walker of Troop A said, “this information was later confirmed. Given this information, (a trooper) eventually initiated a vehicle pursuit of the Nissan on Route 101 west in the town of Brentwood. During the vehicle pursuit, the Nissan traveled at excessive rates of speed and operated in an erratic manner.”

State police continued to chase the SUV on Route 101 west to Route 125 north into Epping as well as a number of local roads and streets. State police, near Hedding Road, laid down stop sticks in order to attempt to deflate the tires on the SUV.

“After continuing for a short distance, the Nissan came to a stop and the operator, the lone occupant in the vehicle, was taken into custody without further incident,” Walker said.

The driver, Braulio Matos, 31, of Cambridge, MA, was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property and reckless conduct, both felonies, as well as aggravated driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, disobeying an officer, and operating without a valid license. He was held on preventive detention in the Rockingham County Jail with arraignment expected on Wednesday. Walker said state police applied for a search warrant for the SUV while additional charges are expected.

Along with New Hampshire State Police, Newton and Epping NH police departments and Amesbury, Boston, and Cambridge MA police departments as well as Mass. State Police were involved in the chase and apprehension of Matos.
