Exeter to Get a 'Mini-South End' Like Portsmouth?

There's a plan to build townhouses at the site of the old Al's Automotive property in downtown Exeter.

The project, which is preliminary and could change, also calls for two small parks on Franklin Street across from the Loaf & Ladle.

The property is owned by the Lampert family, which a representative said is committed to creating an aesthetic space—in addition to seeing financial returns.

The representative, David Choate, of Portsmouth-based real estate firm Colliers International, said the design is inspired by areas of Portsmouth like Porter Street and the South End.

Choate said the downtown Exeter site could become a "mini-South End."

The property would be comprised of townhouses, smaller cottage-style units, a parking lot, and an office building for businesses or even a restaurant.

Choate said there would be room for businesses—possibly a restaurant—in the proposed office building.

What do you think of the plan?
