IMAGE GALLERY: Chihuahuas Up For Adoption

They were recently flown in from California.

The following is from the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Stratham:

The NHSPCA in Stratham recently welcomed home some high-flying dogs straight from Hollywood.

Six Chihuahuas flew all night in hopes of finding a second chance at life in a warm and loving New England home.

California continues to have a serious problem with the overpopulation of Chihuahuas. They became very popular with backyard breeders after their success in movies like Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Legally Blonde.

However, since the nations economic struggles began, many people have abandoned their pets and left them filling shelters all over California.

“Admittedly, we were all a little star struck by the arrival,” said Sheila Ryan, of the NHSPCA. “The days leading up to the big arrival we were a bit nervous. How would they behave? Would they be demanding Divas? Would they be difficult or coy? Would they be strangely Lady Gaga-like and arrive dressed as Maine Coon Cats? We just didn’t know what to expect.”

Even though the dogs had made quite a stressful journey, and literally crossed the country overnight, they came out of their carriers with their tails wagging, and eager to kiss our faces on both cheeks. That’s how it’s done in Hollywood after all!

They are wonderfully sweet and we all fell instantly in love. We are confident they will be a terrific addition to some very lucky New Hampshire families. And they will go quickly once available for adoption.

“We have been thrilled with them. We certainly hope to bring more of these highly adoptable dogs to wonderful families here,” said Jen Corbin, NHSPCA Director of Animal Services.

The precious pups will be available for adoption as soon as their required quarantine is over, most likely on Sunday or Tuesday!

The Adoption Center is open from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Monday, Friday, and Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and closed on Wednesday. For more information about the NHSPCA, visit www.nhspca.org or call 603-772-2921 x106.
