Art Walk Food Contest Winners Announced

Resident and professional chef contests delighted Art Walk 2012 participants, but who took home the big prize?

The third annual Hampton Art Walk, sponsored by the Hampton Arts Network, took place on two nights in downtown Hampton. Many kinds of artists showcased their talents during the walk.

The culinary arts were represented both days with the Edible Art Contest and the Pro Chef Apple Challenge. For both events, participants to the walk
were asked to vote for their favorite.

The Edible Art dazzled all with cleaver creations made of edible items. The top creation was Cheryl Lassiter's "Marooned on Cer-eal Beach" shipwrecked characters made of fondant and gum paste.

Andrea Williams' "Catcher in the Rye" and Karen Raynes' "Celestina Serpentina Hampton Recycling" took second and third place, respectively.

Everyone was a winner in the Pro Chef Challenge. The five Hampton chefs used with apple as the featured ingredient surprised and delighted all with their culinary magic.

Chef Nora of 401 Tavern made an apple strudel, Chef Jeff of the Galley Hatch made a popover with chicken salad and hot caramel apple chai tea, Chef Brad of the Old Salt made a cranberry scone with apple compote and cinnamon apple whipped cream, Chef Tina of Bai Cha made two Thai apple salads, and Chef Ron Boucher of Savory Square Bistro made his parsnip apple bisque and grilled ham and cheese with apple chutney.

Boucher, who also runs Chez Boucher Cooking School, was the People's Choice award winner during the challenge. He received a $50 gift certificate from Hannaford Supermarkets.

All this talent shows that Hampton is a thriving culinary community with restaurants and chefs that rival any in the Seacoast. The walk participants were impressed with the culinary arts events during the Art Walk 2012.
