Officials Close Hampton Beach

Breaking: Tropical Storm Hermine brings heavy winds, dangerous surf, riptides, and some drizzle.

HAMPTON, NH — Officials have closed Hampton Beach this morning due to the turbulent conditions brought to the Seacoast in the wake of Tropical Storm Hermine heading out to sea, according to WMUR-TV. Lifeguards yesterday found the conditions “to be rough,” and officials issued a “totally restricted – not allowed” warning for swimming last night.

Officials will be patrolling the beaches all day today enforcing the ban since stormy weather tends to bring surfers to New Hampshire’s Seacoast.

A high surf advisory was issued by the National Weather Service at 2:30 a.m. today with expected waves up to 10 feet high in some locations. The alert is active until 6 p.m. tonight.

“Extremely rough surf including rip currents are expected through today,” according to the alert. “Nearshore waves are expected to remain at 5 to 10 feet in many locations. There will likely be some beach erosion...as the beaches are constantly exposed to an easterly swell. Beach goers are urged not to go into the water.”
