📰 News we're reading

• Keene State to start national search for new president (keenesentinel.com) — Keene State College is launching a national search for its own dedicated president, confirming the school will remain an independent institution with its own leadership. Interim president Don Birx will continue in the role through 2027 as the university system navigates budget cuts, structural changes, and Keene State works through a significant deficit and academic restructuring.

• More babies delivered in ambulances a possibility if Brattleboro closes labor and delivery (keenesentinel.com) — If Brattleboro Memorial Hospital closes its labor and delivery unit, more pregnant patients may need to travel about 20 miles to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene or other regional hospitals, raising the risk of births in transit. Hospital leaders say financial losses and staffing challenges are driving the proposal, while they simultaneously plan for both closure and possible rescue with help from state officials.

• Ayotte signs law requiring teacher disclosures to parents on gender identity, overriding court (bostonglobe.com) — New Hampshire has enacted a new law requiring teachers to answer parents’ written questions about their children within 10 business days, with limited exceptions for legal conflicts or imminent abuse risk. Supporters say it boosts parental transparency, while teachers’ unions and LGBTQ+ advocates warn it could out students and strain trust. A Westmoreland native who once reported for The Keene Sentinel covers the issue.
