Could Brian Wilson Sign with the Red Sox?

The relief pitcher from Londonderry is expected to become a free agent this week.

Could former Londonderry High School baseball star Brian Wilson sign with the hometown Boston Red Sox? At least one national baseball writer thinks it's a possibility.

ESPN baseball columnist Buster Olney Tweeted on Wednesday that Wilson could be an "interesting possibility" for the Sox. The San Francisco Chronicle says officials with Wilson's current team, the San Francisco Giants, have "hinted" that they do not plan to tender a contract to Wilson by Friday's deadline, making him a free agent.

Wilson – and his signature beard – has been incredibly popular with Giants fans. When healthy, he's been an All-Star caliber closer, saving 48 games in 2010 and helping the Giants win the World Series.

But he missed all but two games in 2012 after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery in April. Wilson has said he'll be ready for Opening Day 2013.

Wilson, 30, was born in Winchester, Mass., but was raised in Londonderry and graduated from Londonderry High School. He went on to play for the Louisiana State University baseball team before signing with the Giants in 2003.
