Getting out of grabs at the Independent Karate School

Has a child of yours ever been grabbed by another kid?  Especially a bigger kid?

When most people think of "karate," they think of learning how to throw kicks and punches.  And that's reasonable enough: students at the Independent Karate School certainly do spend a fair amount of time learning how to deliver kicks and punches with power and accuracy.

One thing I really appreciate, though, is that our students also learn how to escape from a variety of grips or holds (wrist grab, hair grab, choke hold, et cetera).

Up until now (thank goodness), I don't think my teenage sons have had to deal with people trying to punch them all that often, not counting some horsing around.  By contrast, it seems to be fairly common for some wiseacre in the schoolyard to figure out how to apply a headlock or other disconcerting hold.

It's been very beneficial to my kids to know how to get out of situations like this.  Even just having practiced in advance takes a lot of the shock value out of being grabbed.  I like to think that their training would serve them equally well in more dire circumstances.  But even a grab that isn't going to lead to a crime is a pretty unpleasant occurrence, especially if it is intended to be intimidating.  Having the ability to deal competently with this sort of trespass on your personal space is a very good thing.
