Merrimack Firefighters Douse Fire on Greatstone Drive

Wood stove fire caused by buildup of creosote, according to fire marshal.

Merrimack Fire and Rescue teams were sent to a fire this morning on 35 Greatstone Drive, according to an alert by Fire Marshal John Manuele.

Two engines, an ambulance, and Chief Currier and Manuele responded to the scene at around 10:15 a.m. on Jan. 23, and found a chimney fire in a two story home. The teams accessed the roof and removed the chimney cap, and quickly extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes. Firefighters were cleared from the scene at just after 11 a.m. There were no injuries reported.

According to Manuele, after investigating the fire, there were “concerns raised about the installation and operation of the stove.” The cause of the fire was “determined to be unintentional, due to the buildup of creosote in a chimney flue.”

The fire department offered a cautionary note to residents when using heating systems during the winter months.

“Ensure that you understand the proper operation of your heater, stove, etc., and it is properly maintained according to manufacturers instructions,” Manuele requested.
