Merrimack Man Loses His Life in I-95 Crash

Forrest Bishop, 88, crashed into tollbooth in Hampton on May 18, 2015; a medical condition may be a factor in the crash.

An elderly man lost his life earlier today after crashing into a tollbooth on I-95 in Hampton, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Forrest Bishop, 88, of Merrimack, was pronounced dead at Portsmouth Hospital after being injured in the crash on May 18, 2015.

According to state police, troopers received reports of a vehicle traveling north on I-95 that was all over the roadway. The silver Buick later entered the parking lot of the New Hampshire State Liquor and Wine Outlet on the northbound side of the highway in Hampton. The vehicle then exited the parking lot and headed back onto the highway a few minutes later, according to police.

A state trooper attempted to stop the vehicle while it continued to drive north, at a slow speed, erratically.

“As this vehicle entered the Hampton Toll Plaza, it entered a closed section of the plaza that was under maintenance,” according to Sgt. Steven Wheeler of the NHSP. “The vehicle struck the concrete barrier that separates lane 1 and lane 2 northbound.”

Bishop was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to Wheeler.

“Initial investigation revealed that a medical condition may be a factor in this crash however all aspects of the crash still remains under investigation,” he noted.

Assisting agencies at the scene included Hampton Fire and Rescue teams, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, and the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office.
