Possibilities for parents at the Independent Karate School

Congratulations to our four new orange belts, who were promoted Saturday!  Our headmaster likes to say that orange belt is actually the most important rank you will ever receive, because it makes all the others possible.

While the orange belt test was in progress, the Independent Karate School offered an information session for parents on the options that our school offers to adults.

A few parents are currently students in our regular classes, in the kenpo style of karate.  But there is a fair bit of rough and tumble to it, and that's not for everyone.

We also offer self-defense classes that are specifically designed for adults (men and women alike), including adults who may have physical limitations.  The self-defense system taught in this program was created by one of our founding headmasters, based on his lifetime of experience in the martial arts, and is intended for ages 12 to 90.

Specifically, our adult self-defense classes are largely rooted in the art of jiu-jitsu.  What does this mean?  It means that you defeat an attack more by being adroit than by being tough.  You redirect an attacker's momentum so that he is on the ground and you are standing.  Or an attacker grabs you, and with a few deft manipulations, you suddenly have hold of him, in a lock he can't escape.   Nifty, huh?  (More information is available at www.enshudo.com).

Of course it is absolutely fine for parents and guardians to stick to Job One: supporting their children's studies and enjoying their accomplishments.  The IKS just wanted them to know that if they get the martial arts bug while watching their children, they are welcome to learn.

Curious about the Independent Karate School?  Feel free to come to any scheduled class, no prior arrangements needed!  Classes in Merrimack meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 at the VFW post near the Common Man (for a complete class schedule and more information, please visit www.independentkarateschool.com).  Hope to see you there!
