YMCA receives $175,000 bequest from long-time member
Steve Mazur wellness center to be named in his memory.

The YMCA of Greater Nashua is pleased to announce that the Y received $175,000 bequest from the estate of Nashua resident Stephen Mazur. “Steve was an active member of the Y until the age of 98. The staff loved listening to his stories and he spent many hours with us each day. We are so pleased that Steve chose to support the Y through a gift earmarked for the Nashua YMCA,” said Mike LaChance, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Nashua. Mr. Mazur was one of the longest members of the Y, enjoying membership for over 50 years.
“I remember seeing Steve on the Jumbotron at Fenway Park when he was honored for his 100th birthday in 2012,” Said Joe Manzoli, YMCA Chief Operating Officer. “He was in his happy place talking sports while meeting with friends at the Y.” During years of declining health, Steve stayed connected to Y staff and members.
When Mr. Mazur returned from his service in the Navy during World War II, he joined the Nashua YMCA, which at that time was located on Temple Street. He was self-employed as a barber for many years. Mr. Mazur passed on September 26, 2013, at the age of 101. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine.
The YMCA is using this donation toward facility expansion at the Nashua Y, located at 24 Stadium Drive. The Y opened this branch on May 21, 2011. “Steve loved working out at the Y and his donation will be used to expand our wellness offerings to the community,” LaChance said. When the Y opens this new space, they will honor the memory of Mr. Mazur by naming it the Steve Mazur Wellness Area.
