Nashua Closes Pennichuck Deal [VIDEO]

A celebration at City Hall was followed by a ceremonial toast at Martha's Exchange.

It was a long road, but today the City of Nashua finally sealed the deal, taking over the Pennichuck Corporation and control of its own water supply.

Following a brief ceremony at City Hall, Alderman-At-Large Barbara Pressly invited anyone in the room, "or anyone you see walking down the street" to join in a symbolic toast at Martha's Exchange.

Pressly had assembled about 50 vintage champagne glasses she's been collecting from local flea markets for this particular occasion.

"It has been almost 10 years to the day – we actually met at Martha's on January 14, 2002 and took that vote to go forward with this," said Pressly. "There were so many people involved back then. We had meetings and raised money – I still have some of the signs," she said.

"We stood at the landfill every Saturday handing out literature to get people informed and involved. It's truly the most important thing that's happened in the city of Nashua, and the people made it happen."
