Local businesses are the heart of our communities. Patch had a chance to talk with Kaitlyn Sheary, Critical Care Transport Nurse for Boston MedFlight.
Tell us a bit about your business or organization: Boston MedFlight is a nonprofit organization that works to transport critically ill and injured patients across New England to hospitals that can provide the level of care they need.
How long have you been doing business in town? I have been a nurse for 12 years and have enjoyed working at Boston MedFlight for the last five. Boston MedFlight has been in operation much longer and celebrated its 40th anniversary this past year! Boston MedFlight has been based at Hanscom Field in Bedford since 1995 and now has five bases across Massachusetts and one in southern New Hampshire.
What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started? Following in my mom's footsteps, I started my first nursing job in a Cardiothoracic ICU and moved to ER nursing after that. The transition to flight nursing allowed me to build on what I enjoyed as a bedside ER and ICU nurse but with more autonomy, a fast pace and endless opportunities to learn. I am constantly challenged by both my patients and coworkers and love that each patient now gets 100% of my focus.
What's the most common piece of advice you give to customers? I can't offer much advice to my patients but I can always assure them and their families that regardless of their reason for transport, they're going to be brought to one of the best hospitals in the world and will get the care they need. We are so fortunate to have not just one but a roster of hospitals ready to accept our patients and perform specialized care without missing a beat.
What’s the most satisfying part of your job? I enjoy not knowing what the next call will bring, but also the feeling of confidence that comes with being part of a team that embraces that challenge. Working alongside our amazing EMS and hospital partners across New England, especially during critical moments, is incredibly rewarding and reminds me every day how strong and collaborative the emergency care community is.
How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others? I believe Boston MedFlight has earned the respect of our community by remaining consistent in the quality of care we provide across decades of service. Plus, being a nonprofit means patients are never left with a financial burden after their transport.
