MANCHESTER, NH — A Gate City man was arrested last week on multiple charges — including biting a police dog — after complaints were filed against him at a Queen City hotel. Manchester police were sent to the La Quinta Inn on Front Street for a report of a man barricaded inside of a hotel room "behaving erratically," according to Manchester Police Public Information Officer Heather Hamel. Police made "multiple attempts" to get Matthew Williams, 35, of Nashua, to come out of the room and speak with officers or answer the phone.

"The man was reportedly throwing things, yelling, and acting aggressive," Hamel said in a statement.

After their communication attempts failed, police called in the New Hampshire State Police K-9 unit to assist. When the hotel room door was finally opened, police reportedly found the area barricaded.

"Williams was uncooperative," Hamel stated. "Since he wasn't complying with their commands, NH State Police utilized their K-9 to affect the arrest."

Williams allegedly wrapped his arms around the dog and a struggle ensued. At one point, "Williams growled, opened his mouth, and tried to bite the dog on the top of the head," Hamel alleged.

Later on Monday, Hamel clarified that the first report was incorrect that the Williams allegedly bit the dog, making contact with the dog's head, but not breaking the skin of the dog.

"The dog was not injured," she added.

Williams was arrested charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, and willful interference with police dogs. He was held and is scheduled to be arraigned in Manchester Circuit Court on July 1.
