Heroin Antidote Narcan May Be Stocked in Nashua Schools

"We need to our be proactive and look at this like defibrillators and EpiPens," a school official said.

A top Nashua school official wants the district to explore the possibility of stocking the city’s middle and high schools with the heroin antidote Narcan.

Heroin abuse has been declared a public health crisis in New Hampshire. So far in this year, Nashua police said they have recorded 142 overdoses—including 16 deaths.

Narcan is available as an injection or nasal spray. It reverses the effects of a potentially deadly overdoses.

Nashua Board of Education President George Farrington told the board last week that heroin abuse may not be a huge problem in Nashua schools—but stocking Narcan is still worth looking into.

“We need to our be proactive and look at this like defibrillators and EpiPens,” Farrington told the board, adding Narcan could be stocked at the high school and middle school levels.

New Hampshire officials last month announced Narcan is now available for free at 13 locations across the state. Many police departments now carry the antidote.
