3 Dead After Police Standoff At Manchester Hotel

Police said Stephen Marshall was shot and killed at the Quality Inn in Manchester. Two other unidentified suspects died during a standoff.

MANCHESTER, NH — Three suspects are dead following a shootout and 15-hour standoff with police at the Quality Inn in Manchester Wednesday night and Thursday morning. One of the suspects, Stephen Marshall, 51, was killed in a police-involved shooting Wednesday night, while law enforcement officials say Nashua police discovered two more people dead in a first-floor hotel room late Thursday morning following a gunfire-filled standoff.

New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon MacDonald said during a press conference Thursday afternoon that Manchester police and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agents went to the hotel on John Devine Drive to serve a warrant for Marshall and one other suspect at the hotel. Police say Marshall was seen exiting a hotel room from a broken window and that he engaged police and a DEA agent while carrying a silver, semi-automatic hand gun.

Gunfire was exchanged and Marshall was hit. He was brought to Elliott Hospital with gunshot wounds and pronounced dead.

Officials say Manchester and Nashua SWAT teams attempted to negotiate with the two remaining suspects inside the hotel over the next 12 hours, but were met with multiple shots coming from the room. When Nashua police were able to get into the room at about 10:15 a.m., they say an adult male and female suspect were found dead.

Law enforcement officials would not reveal the cause of death of the second and third suspect at the press conference. They will each undergo an autopsy at the state Medical Examiner’s office. Their identities were withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

"This crime scene is complex and we expect to take several days to complete processing," MacDonald said.

Both Mayor Joyce Craig and Manchester Police Chief Carlo Capano commended the responding officers for their discipline and diligence during the extended standoff, which resulted in no police or bystander physical injuries.

"It’s disheartening we have to face these types of incidents like today’s," Capano said. "When you think about a nine-hour period being fired upon, we are truly blessed that no none was hurt."

DEA Special Agent in Charge Jon Delena said he could not confirm the nature of the warrants that were being served to the suspects, but added: "Obviously, we are the Drug Enforcement Agency, so it was a drug-related offense."

Officials are asking for anyone who has information about Marshall’s whereabouts over the past few weeks to contact Sergeant Matt Amatucci of the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit at 603-419-8291.

Roads around the hotel and Interstate 293 ramps were closed throughout the morning but have since reopened.
