NASHUA, NH — With as much as 18 inches of snow heading to the Gate City, officials have declared a snow emergency for Saturday.

City officials said residents should plan on difficult travel from Saturday morning to Sunday morning and be prepared for significant reductions in driving visibility, at times, during the heaviest parts of the storm.

"It is very challenging to keep streets clear with heavy snow conditions," an alert stated. "This storm is likely to contain heavy bands of blowing snow which will impact travel in the area. If you don’t need to be out on the roads, please stay off them for your safety and to make room for equipment working to keep roads open."

During the snow emergency, there will be no on-street or municipal surface lot parking allowed. Overnight parking will be suspended. Free parking is available in the Elm and High streets garages. Residents do not need to wait until 9 a.m. on Saturday to move their vehicles into parking garages. There will be no snow emergency parking in leased spaces between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Vehicles that remain on city streets and in lots will be towed. After being towed, the vehicles may be retrieved from the Solid Waste Department for a fine of $315. After the snow emergency has been lifted, cars may be picked up between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Depending on the duration of the storm and snowfall amounts, plowing crews may need more time to clear all street and regularly plowed sidewalk routes.

Public works will be working on primary routes initially. Residential side streets will not be plowed immediately. Regularly plowed sidewalks will not be plowed until crews have a chance to clear primary and residential streets.
