A Nashua dog named "Whiskey" was rescued by firefighters at Sandy Pond.

NASHUA, NH — A Nashua dog named "Whiskey" was rescued by firefighters after falling through the ice at Sandy Pond Wednesday. Whiskey was out for walk with its owner when the animal tumbled into the water about 60 feet from shore, according to Nashua Deputy fire Chief George Walker.

A firefighters donned a waterproof suit and ventured in the frigid water carrying a rope as Whiskey struggled to stay afloat, Walker said. When the firefighter reached the dog, he clutched the animal as firefighters on shore pulled the pair to safety. Whiskey was wrapped in blankets to warm up.

"The dog was cold and shivering (but) did not appear to have suffered any injuries," Walker said in a statement.

The incident happened at about 11:30 a.m. as Whiskey and its owner were out for a walk.

"Warmer temperatures and the increasing strength of the sun have thawed frozen lakes and streams, rendering them unsafe," Walker added. "Please refrain from venturing out on the ice and make sure pets are secured around open bodies of water."
