Nashua High South Wins Quarter-Finals Of Granite State Challenge

The students defeated Fall Mountain Regional High School Saturday; future quarterfinals feature Londonderry, Merrimack, and Portsmouth.

NASHUA, NH — Nashua High School South defeated another New Hampshire school as part of the Granite State Challenge quiz contest on Saturday.

The school defeated Fall Mountain Regional High School, 450 to 390, in the first quarter-final of the season.

Nashua South led for most of the game, including through the first two rounds, which included questions about which country marches first during the Olympics (Greece) and a question about Tony Stark of Marvel Comics fame. During the second round, points go from 10 to 20, and the questions get harder.

By the third round, Nashua South had a 100-point lead.

In the final round, questions were worth 20 points, but an incorrect answer led to a reduction of 20 points. Fall Mountain came out of the gate strong answering the first six questions correctly, and was down by only 20 points. Nashua South missed a question that Fall Mountain answered correctly, helping the players take the lead.

With a minute left, Fall Mountain led by 20 points. However, the school could not hold onto the lead — losing 20 points on one question and being unable to answer the remaining question, leading to a win by Nashua.

The Nashua South High School team featured Captain and senior Sri Korandla, senior Kiritu Gachuki, senior Keshav Rangan, and sophomore Curtis Newton. The team alternates were senior Hrishi Joshi and sophomore Deetya Nagri. The team was coached by Lex Duval.

The Fall Mountain Regional High School team was captain and senior Jacob Bradly and seniors Marcus Flynn, Colin Regan, and Enrique Ingram-Mendez. The team alternate was junior Grace St. Pierre. The team was coached by Nick Belsky. The school is located in Langdon and serves the towns of Alstead, Acworth, Charlestown, Langdon, Walpole, Goshen, Lempster, and Unity.

In the coming weeks, the final quarterfinals feature Merrimack vs. Plymouth, Portsmouth vs. ConVal, and Manchester Central vs. Londonderry.
