Nashua Police Investigate Suspicious Package: Update

Stepping Stones, a drop-in center for homeless people under 25, reported a suspicious package in the lobby; other businesses evacuated.

NASHUA, NH — Nashua police investigated a suspicious package incident Friday in the area of 3 Pine St. Extension, according to an alert on Twitter.

The department said the “large police presence” was due to “a suspicious package.” Investigators asked residents “to stay away from the area until we complete our investigation and ensure the area is safe.”

Other alerts on Twitter reported the bomb squad had responded to the area and several area businesses had been evacuated.

Around 11:30 a.m., police said there was no danger to the public and the area was cleared.

Sgt. John Cinelli, the public information officer for the Nashua Police Department, said later on Friday that police were sent to Stepping Stones, a drop-in center for homeless people under 25, for a suspicious package in the lobby.

“Due to the suspicious nature and unknown origin of this item, Stepping Stones and several of the surrounding business were evacuated and members of the Nashua Police Department’s Hazardous Device Unit and Criminal Investigation Division, along with Nashua Fire and Rescue’s Hazardous Materials Team were notified to further this investigation,” he said. “The suspicious item was ultimately declared non-hazardous and the owner was located.”

No charges will be forthcoming as a result of the incident at this time, Cinelli added.
