As the two major political parties in the state fight for control of the state Senate, the trenches are getting muddy out there on the campaign trails. Currently, Republicans hold a two-seat edge in the body and both sides are doing everything they can to win, including bombarding voters with downright nasty mailers.
One seat the Democrats would like to hold onto is District 5, currently held by State Sen. Peggy Gilmour, D-Nashua, even though it leans Republican, according to political watchers. Gilmour was previously elected to the seat in 2008 and then elected again in 2012.
Former state Rep. Kevin Avard, R-Nashua, is attempting to unseat Gilmour. On top of this bankruptcy mailer, Avard recently made headlines after it was revealed that he was arrested in the late 1990s.

Avard did not respond to an email inquiring about the bankruptcy allegation. The New Hampshire Democratic Party also did not respond to an email request to see the documentation backing up its mailer.
District 5 covers parts of Nashua, Brookline, Greenville, Hollis, Mason, New Ipswich, and Rindge. The election is on Nov. 4.
