New Private Middle School Opening in Nashua, NH

Built on a belief in student autonomy and a commitment to parent engagement, The Harkness House offers a true alternative to middle school education in southern New Hampshire.

Harkness House is the first of its kind school dedicated entirely to middle level education for students in grades 7-9. By utilizing an innovative approach to instruction, The Harkness House is able to offer students and families small classes, advanced curriculum, and unparalleled access.
The instructional method at The Harkness House combines small group inquiry with focused periods of observation. We leverage technology to expand the audience of our lessons while retaining the best aspects of in-person instruction. By dedicating resources to both inquiry and observation, The Harkness House nearly doubles instructional time per day. This unique classroom model allows us to focus on developing independent and successful thinkers who can engage in a rigorous program of studies. The Harkness House offers a real curricular difference, culminating in an opportunity to succeed on Advanced Placement assessments in the ninth grade. “We’ve brought together a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience in education,” said Nathan Fellman, the Head of School. “We’ve really tried to distill middle level education to what matters most. We focus on students and families and we have a commitment to small classes that you can’t find anywhere else. At the same time, we’re evolving education with our instructional recording studios in a way that’s never before been broadly implemented.”
The Harkness House is the only school in operation that records and produces its lessons. The rich inquiry that occurs during classes is captured for future on-demand consumption. No student ever needs to miss a lesson. Every student has unlimited opportunity for content review. Parents and families have authentic access to the curriculum, providing transparency and accountability unmatched by any other school. “This is such a really unique approach,” said Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bill Demers. “For a variety of reasons, it’s not something that we’re able to implement in a public school setting. It’s exciting to think how far students may be able to go in this innovative environment.”
The Harkness House is now enrolling students for Fall 2022. The school is currently open by appointment at 410 Amherst Street in Nashua.
