Bay State Porsche Driver Bagged Going 109 MPH On I-95: NHSP
Clifford Bates of Concord and formerly of Chelmsford allegedly told a trooper he thought he was driving 68 mph and just wanted to get home.

GREENLAND, NH — A Massachusetts man is due in court next month after allegedly recklessly driving on I-95 South yesterday morning, according to state police. Clifford Bates, 53, of Concord, MA, was arrested on Nov. 4, 2017, for reckless driving, operating after suspension, and open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. New Hampshire State Police’s Special Enforcement Unit was monitoring traffic from both the ground and air this weekend and allegedly spotted a 2005 Porsche Boxster driving 109 mph at around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to Lt. Sean Haggerty of the NHSP.

“(The trooper) made contact with Bates,” Haggerty stated. “When asked why he was traveling at that speed, Bates stated that he thought he was traveling 68 mph and was just trying to get home.”
Bates was booked, processed, and released. He’s due in Portsmouth District Court on Dec. 18.

The NH State Police Special Enforcement Unit regularly interdicts elevated speed violations and other aggressive driving behaviors, Haggerty noted in the press statement. Its members patrol across the state often utilizing the state police aircraft during commuter traffic periods and holiday travel times with the goal of keeping New Hampshire’s roadways safe for all residents and visitors.
Bates was charged with three counts of violating a restraining order back in March after being hauled into Lowell District Court. At the time, he was living in Chelmsford. His attorney reportedly explained that Bates had been battling a substance abuse issue and had planned to enter rehab in Thailand, according to a report on Chelmsford Patch.
