Art is everywhere, in everyone, on constant display visually, spiritually, naturally. Next to Newmarket’s library, the 1998 Elm Street Mural reflects people, places and events of that era. As New Hampshire’s weather is not entirely kind to murals, its paint has chipped, the wall is damaged. But, thanks to those for whom art is a passion, work is in progress to recreate the mural, to create a more sustainable mode of communal art.
When I spoke with Gerry Bresnahan, a member of the Newmarket Art, Cultural and Tourism Commission (ACT) she was fresh off a community tile project in which Newmarketers painted tiles of all forms and colors and is currently awaiting permanent display. Watch this space for more on that project. But in the works is a refreshed mural which ideally will be in full swing for Newmarket’s 300th Anniversary. Save the date of June 4, 2027. Come alive with joy, with color and community and help get the new mural started. Brushes and aprons will be available. Sure, it’s a long way off but the best plans start early. The Elm Street Mural promises to be spectacular once again.

Art is necessary to community, to vibrancy, to life. And, Budget Voguers, you ARE art. Come out and celebrate Newmarket or your own piece of the world. Notice art, buy art, support the arts, incite art. And then, dear Voguers, community is not only created, it is celebrated.
