Gay son of a Rabbi, budding astronomer and brilliant mathematician Gabriel Geismar escapes his father's New Orleans home to college in the northeast. There, he becomes enamored with Marghie, a cinema-obsessed vegetarian, and Daniel, an angry counterculture figure--twin children of and Manhattan Project physicist Gregor Hundert. Over the course of a decade, Gabriel enters more and more into their world, discovering at the inmost center that he alone must bear the weight of their tragedies.
