Eversource Offers Ways to Manage Winter Energy Costs

With cold weather on the way, there are programs and tips to help customers stay warm and save money.

While the forecast this week is calling for warmer temperatures, New Englanders know that colder weather is just around the corner.

Once the mercury starts to drop, Eversource customers will begin to crank up their thermostats and will want to make sure their energy dollars are not escaping through inefficient windows, doors, and walls.

The company is offering tips to help customers reduce energy usage, keep their homes and businesses buttoned up, and better manage their utility bills to save money, according to a press statement.

“After last year’s historically harsh winter, New Englanders know how challenging the heating season can be,” said Penni Conner, Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer at Eversource. “That’s why our energy efficiency programs are designed to help folks reduce their usage, keep the heat in their homes, and ensure that every energy dollar is well-spent.”

Making some low-cost efficiency improvements around the home can dramatically lower energy use and heating bills. Simple steps like turning down the thermostat, caulking drafty doors and windows, making sure heating vents aren’t blocked, and switching to energy-efficient light bulbs, all help save customers money.

A good way to find out what efficiency measures are needed in any home is to sign up for an energy assessment through NHSaves. To further help customers manage seasonal energy spikes, the company’s payment options, including budget billing, can help control household expenses by providing equal monthly payments throughout the year. Eversource also partners with several community action agencies to offer income-eligible customer programs such as matching payment and winter protection. Also, choosing to heat with an efficient fuel choice is another way customers can save. More than half of New England’s electricity is now produced using clean burning natural gas.

Though natural gas remains an abundant and inexpensive fuel, regional pipeline limitations coupled with a growing dependency on it to produce electricity, are pushing generation supply prices higher. To be able to offer customers more affordable power, Eversource is pursuing strategic projects to address these challenges.

Eversource, Spectra Energy and National Grid have proposed Access Northeast, a project that will expand the region’s natural gas capacity using existing pipeline routes. Additionally, the company’s Northern Pass project will bring clean, renewable hydropower to New Hampshire and New England, with an anticipated in-service date of 2019.
