Tuesday was back-to-school day for Portsmouth students.
There are about 2,600 students in the school district. All but high school upperclassmen and kindergarteners went back to school Tuesday.
"I would characterize it as a very smooth opening with a lot of smiles on the faces of students and staff," said Superintendent Ed McDonough.
The Portsmouth Middle School opened on time after a massive renovation project.
"Folks did a wonderful job getting things ready to go to welcome 6th-graders to the renovated 1930s space," McDonough said.
The $37.5 million project added 250,000 square feet to the school and included a new recreation center.
High school upperclassmen return to school Wednesday, while kindergarteners return Sept. 3.
