The season for backyard gatherings is almost here! There are few things worse than enjoying time outside with family and friends and being bombarded by uninvited guests. Mosquitoes, black flies, ants, and other insects are not only a nuisance, but some of them can carry sickness that is easily transmitted to humans. Rather than loading up on bug spray or lighting tiki torches, turn to your landscaping for help deterring them!
Many plants contain compounds that bugs do not enjoy, so they will steer clear of areas where they grow. Consider planting some of the following around your house to help keep pests away:
- Rosemary
- Mint
- Lavender
- Lemon balm
- Sage
- Chives
- Basil
Add them to window boxes, borders, or plant in pots that can be moved closer to where you'll be. Not only will these plants keep pests away, they are also nice to have on hand to add flavoring to a dish, or add pizazz to a cocktail. Keep in mind that when these plants flower, bees will be attracted to them so keep an eye out!
