Four Men Charged at DWI Checkpoint

Portsmouth Police screened 126 drivers on Friday between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on the Route 1 Bypass North.

Portsmouth Police arrested four men for drunken driving Friday during a sobriety checkpoint that was operated between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on the Route 1 Bypass.

Portsmouth Police Capt. Mike Schwartz said 126 drivers were screened by police and members of the Portsmouth Police Citizens Academy just before the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge.

Those charged included: Steve Coughlin, 42, of 22 Franklin St., Peabody, Mass. for driving under the influence, second offense, possession of marijuana, driving after suspensions and resisting arrest;

Michael McFadden, 48, of 12 Old Stage Road in Hampton Falls was charged with driving under the influence;

Joshua Mokarzel, 21, of 13 Lower Falls Road in Falmouth, Maine was charged with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana;

Ernest John Morin, 51, of 213 Mackerel Ave. in Portsmouth was charged with driving under the influence.

Portsmouth Police said Coughlin was held on cash bail. The other three men were released on personal recognizance bail and are scheduled to be arraigned in the Portsmouth Court on September 17. The sobriety checkpoint was authorized by the Rockingham County Superior Court.
