Ikebana Demonstration and Exhibit at the Library

PORTSMOUTH, NH - There is a centuries-old art form in which flowers are arranged to approach their ideal beauty. Lovers of Japanese culture, flowers, and art are invited to experience Ikebana at the Portsmouth Public Library from June 23 to June 25, 2016.

A demonstration will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2016. This event is free and open to the public.

This exhibit is arranged by the Kittery Point Ikenobo Chapter. The chapter is affiliated with the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America in San Francisco and Ikenobo Headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. Four members of the Kittery Point Chapter will demonstrate four different Ikebana styles. The exhibit in the library lobby will be of arrangements made by members of the Kittery Point Ikenobo Chapter.

Ikebana is a way to express one’s feelings with each individual flower. Many different Ikebana styles have appeared during the 550 years of Ikebana history. They each have a distinctive character and are arranged with a particular form or pattern in mind. However, awareness of natural beauty allows the arranger to gradually approach the ideal beauty which Ikebana seeks.

The Portsmouth Public Library works to serve the informational, educational and entertainment needs of the community. The library offers free materials, computers, WiFi, classes, exhibits, online resources, events and more. PPL was established in 1881.
