Library to Hold Robotics for Students

Library teaming up with New Heights to promote FIRST LEGO League robotics after school program.

The Portsmouth Public Library Youth Department, New Heights and local electronics innovator, Nathanial Steier, announce an afternoon of robotics on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 2:30 p.m. to 4;30 p.m. The goal of the afternoon is to inform and inspire middle and high school students interested in science and robotics.

New Heights team leaders will set up an information table in the Youth Department to promote their FIRST LEGO League robotics after school program.

“We hope to catch some of the afterschool traffic.” said Wayne Moulton Jr. Program Staff, Database Coordinator and Webmaster at New Heights.  “We know there are kids out there that can benefit from this program and we are hoping this collaboration with the library will help those kids find us.”  New Heights will participate once again this year in the FIRST LEGO League robotics competition with both a boys and girls robotics team.

New Heights is the Seacoast’s largest, most comprehensive out-of-school program for young people between the ages of 11 to 18.  The over arching mission of New Heights is to help teens make a successful transition to adulthood.

To further engage young people, Nathaniel Steier, electrical engineer and owner of NSteier LLC, will guide students in the  making of an LED “throwie”, a simple, fun-to-make LED tag you can attach to metal objects.  This take-home craft combines electronics and magnetics in one neat package. All materials will be supplied by the library.  NSteier, LLC was founded in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and is dedicated to promoting science, technology, engineering, and math [STEM].

“I’m fascinated with the design and problem solving involved with electrical engineering and science,” said Nathaniel Steier.  “I want to share that with our future pioneers.”

“I’m anxious for kids to meet Nathaniel and Wayne,” said Susan Laun, Head of Youth Services at the Portsmouth Public Library.  “Their enthusiasm about electronics is contagious.”

The Library is located at 175 Parrott Avenue next to the middle school.
