New Heights’s Team-Building Program continues to expand

New Heights continues to expand its programming, its reach into the community...now serving adults.

In today’s global economy, the ability to work as a team, effectively communicate with people both on-site and in virtual offices, and problem solve in creative ways are critical—and increasingly difficult to find—skills. Recognizing this need in industry, New Heights in Portsmouth and Exeter developed and launched a team-building program earlier this year to great effect.

Located in Wellesley, MA, Wellesley Free Library is one organization that recently hired New Heights, which Director Jamie Jurgensen said reflected their desire to achieve very specific objectives.

“We were hoping to provide opportunities for staff to think creatively and flexibly, do some team building for our already great team, and reinforce the importance of interconnectedness among departments in the library,” she said.

Incorporating a number of different activities, some of which included printmaking and building structures while blind-folded, Jurgensen said the entire experience helped colleagues connect with one another in new ways. She said she found New Heights’ Escape Room particularly enjoyable.

“[It] was a new challenge for many,” she said. “It really got the brain revved up in a way that many, including myself, haven't experienced before.”

Founded in 1987, New Heights offers programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) in addition to Adventure and Arts & Culture. Offered in workshop format, many of these programs align with 21st Century Skills, which center on collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity.

While historically serving youth, grades 3 through 12, New Heights has expanded its target population to include adults, which New Heights Executive Director Tracey Tucker is less of a leap than some might think.

“Many of the things we are teaching youth are precisely the skills that can enhance the workplace today,” she said. “Benefits from fun and well-designed team-building programs include enhanced productivity, communication and problem-solving skills. Research has also shown increases in motivation and the ability to think creatively.”

In looking ahead at the future of New Heights’ emerging team-building program for adults, Tucker expressed optimism.

“It makes sense for us to expand into this arena, because we already have the staff and resources in place,” she added.
