Newington PD Steps Up Security at Regal Cinemas

Regal Entertainment Group officials would not say if additional security measures will be taken for "Dark Knight Rises" showings following the shootings in Aurora, Colo.

Newington Police plan to be extra vigilant when they conduct their patrols at Regal Cinemas on Friday in wake of the tragic shootings that took place in Aurora, Colo., during the "Dark Knight Rises" movie that left 12 dead and at least 50 wounded.

Newington Police Sgt. Tim Stuart would not discuss what additional steps the police department or Regal Cinemas at the Crossing at Fox Run will take, but he said they are well aware of the possible threat posed by copy cats.

As a rule, Stuart said the Newington Police already conduct regular patrols for at least a few police officers at the movie theater and he said they will continue.

According to the Associated Press, a gunman threw tear gas into a midnight showing of the new film "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado, before opening fire on the crowd.

Inside Regal Cinemas, manager Glen Milhomme said "The Dark Knight Rises" premiered at 12 midnight and the film has enjoyed a steady following of fans despite the tragedy. Like Stuart, he would not share any details about any additional security measures Regal Cinemas may take to guard against any potential threats.

He referred all media inquires to Russ Nunley at the Regal Entertainment Group Nunley, who serves as vice president of marketing and communications for the theater chain headquartered in Knoxville, Tenn., issued the following statement via e-mail Friday afternoon:

"We are profoundly saddened by the tragedy that occurred at a Denver area theatre and are concerned for the victims and their families. The security and safety of our guests and staff is always our number one priority.  As is our custom, we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our security needs as necessary. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families."
