Open Letter to the Portsmouth Herald

Some Portsmouth residents and journalists here and elsewhere are expressing outrage that a newspaper -- which purportedly believes in the basic mission of journalism -- recently opined that it is against the public interest to ask public officials to publicly disclose any financial conflict of interest or make their finances public (see June 2 editorial in the Portsmouth Herald). What would the Portsmouth Herald management have done in the face of the need for financial disclosure in the case of Washington Post reporters Woodward and Bernstein?
