Optometrists Donate Time for Screenings at Families First
Five help diabetic patients receive comprehensive eye examinations.
On Saturday, March 14, five optometrists and other volunteers donated their time to provide comprehensive eye examinations to diabetic patients at Families First Health and Support Center, according to a press statement.
Dr. Amy Pruszenski, a member of both the Portsmouth Lions Club and the New Hampshire Optometric Association, coordinated volunteers from both organizations to make the eye exams run smoothly.
“Comprehensive dilated eye examinations are critical for diabetic patients, because they reduce the risk of blindness due to diabetic retinopathy,” she said.

Optometrists David Hartenstein, Shirlie Dowd, Jamie Belanger, Adrienne Pak, and OD student, Barbie Jodoin, came to Families First to care for the patients’ eyesight and eye health, using equipment donated by Jordan Family Eyecare, Harbor Eyecare Center, Hampton Eyecare Associates and VSP (Vision Service Plan). The Portsmouth Lions, Margot Shea, and Sandi Lane helped to keep appointments on schedule and facilitate care throughout the event. Eastern Bank donated food for volunteers and staff.
During the day-long clinic, 19 patients were evaluated and offered glasses, if needed. One patient was found to have retinal disease and offered follow-up care. Nine others were found to have other vision challenges and recommended for follow-up. Many mentioned that they cannot afford eye exams and glasses.
