Portsmouth Man Dies on Route 1

Police say while trying to cross the road this morning, Timothy Morrison ran into a moving vehicle and then was hit by another vehicle.

A local man has been killed after an accident on Route 1 in Portsmouth earlier today, according to police.

Timothy Morrison, 51, of Portsmouth, was reportedly attempting to cross Route 1 near the Southgate Plaza at around 6 a.m. on Jan. 12, when he ran into the side of a Jeep Cherokee. The impact knocked him to the ground and he was subsequently run over by a Chevrolet van. After being hit by the van, Morrison became entangled in the under carriage of the van and was pronounced dead at the scene by an assistant deputy medical examiner.

“It does not appear that speed, drugs, alcohol or driver distraction were factors in this crash however the crash still remains under investigation,” according to Sgt. Steven Wheeler of the New Hampshire State Police.

Portsmouth Police officers were the first to respond to the scene and then the state police’s Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Unit. Portsmouth Police issued an alert, which was posted on the Portsmouth NH Patch Facebook site, about an hour after the accident, letting residents know about the traffic problem.
