Portsmouth School Board Votes For Later Start Times

Middle school and high school students will start later next school year.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — On Nov. 29, 2016, the Portsmouth School Board voted in favor of later start times for middle school and high school students starting next year, according to the story on Seacoastonline.com.

The school board voted eight to one to change the 7:30 a.m. start time to 8:25 a.m. for the high school, and 8:30 a.m. for the middle school. The change is a result of research that found adolescents’ sleep rhythms shift during puberty. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended later start times to benefit adolescent health and learning.

This change will have an impact on cost, as the middle school and high school buses will operate during the same times as the elementary school buses.
