Seacoast Pathways Celebrates 5 Years of Service To The Community
Non-Clinical mental health "clubhouse" in Portsmouth turns 5 years old this month

On October 20 Seacoast Pathways will celebrate its 5th year of operation in Portsmouth. A month-long celebration will provide the clubhouse community the opportunity to reflect and look back on the slow but steady growth of its non clinical mental health center that has helped adults struggling with mental illness find a place of their own where recovery flourishes.
The clubhouse was founded by Don Moore, longtime seacoast resident and philanthropist in 2014 after much research and planning with recruited volunteers who now comprise the board of directors. They all shared a need to answer a simple question, “why isn’t there a place for people with mental illness to go during their recovery when they are unable to work and tend to isolate at home?” Their research led them to Clubhouse International and the “clubhouse” model that is practiced by clubhouses in over 300 countries. The first goal was to find a facility. Don’s church, The North Church Parish House on Spinney Road very generously offered space for the purpose of opening a clubhouse. Then, two staff were hired—Maggie Barker and Joe Hill— and formal operations began October 20 with five members.
After five years of solid growth Seacoast Pathways moved to a larger facility at 155 Brewery Lane.
Members have extolled the importance of the clubhouse in their mental health recovery. Member Maureen Hayward recently wrote, "Seacoast Pathways reminds me of what I am able to accomplish---not what I am unable to do."
