Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine doctor performs replacement surgery while using robotic assistance.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — Dr. William Sutherland of Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine recently received his training and certification in MAKOplasty Partial Knee Resurfacing, an innovative procedure in knee replacement surgery using robotic assistance, according to a press statement. He received the certification this October at the Stryker Headquarters in Mahwah, NJ.

The MAKOplasty approach is designed to relieve pain caused by joint degeneration in patients with osteoarthritis. Now available at York Hospital in York, ME, the joint replacement surgery is powered by the RIO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System, a precise method that allows surgeons to spare patients’ healthy bone and tissue while securing an implant for improved mobility. Other benefits of the minimally invasive procedure include: rapid recovery and minimal hospitalization, less scarring, resurfacing of the knee joint, and a smaller incision during surgery.

Sutherland, a Board-Certified physician at Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, specializes in spine surgery and joint replacement, including: the treatment of herniated discs, spinal stenosis, knee surgery and replacement, hip surgery and replacement, arthroscopic surgery, arthritis treatment, sports injuries and general orthopaedic surgery. He is a member of the North American Spine Society and New England Spine Study Group. He is also certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and in the iFuse Implant Procedure, a spine fusion technique.
