Two Rescued After Fishing Boat Becomes Engulfed in Flames

Portsmouth Firefighters, NH Fish and Game, Coast Guard sent to assist with boat fire off Odiorne.

RYE, NH – The Marine Patrol unit had a busy morning rescuing two people after a fishing boat caught on fire just south of Portsmouth Harbor, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Patrol units were sent to the area at just before 11 a.m. on June 19, 2016, for a report of black smoke emanating from the vessel. Portsmouth Firefighters were sent to the Odiorne area not long after to assist with the mutual aid response, according to a post on Twitter.

Marine Patrol reported that two people were “hanging onto a line that was tied to the boat” and personnel were able to retrieve them from the waters “as the boat was engulfed in flames.

Portsmouth Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire shortly there after and the boat was towed to Portsmouth Harbor. The U.S. Coast Guard and Kittery ME Harbor Master also assisted.

There were no injuries and the fire remains under investigation.
