📰 News we're reading

1. Rochester says sewer rates will more than double to pay for required wastewater upgrades (straffordnews.com) — Rochester residents are being warned that sewer rates are expected to more than double to pay for major wastewater facility upgrades required by federal nitrogen and phosphorus limits by 2032. Planning is underway now, with construction anticipated to start in 2028 so the city can meet strict environmental permits and add capacity for future growth.

2. Rochester Fire Department: neighbors alerted residents to Plante Street fire (straffordnews.com) — A recent early‑morning fire on Plante Street in Rochester left two residents displaced but alive thanks to quick‑thinking neighbors who woke them when smoke alarms failed. Firefighters contained the blaze, though a pet cat died, and investigators say oxygen cylinders on the porch intensified the fire. The fire chief is urging all Rochester households to test alarms and ensure they’re audible from bedrooms.

3. Rochester Colonial Moments: Uncovering the Location of Rochester's First Meeting House Part II (rochesternh.gov) — Rochester’s colonial historian Patrick Connelly walks you through evidence pinpointing where the town’s first meeting house once stood on what was known as Haven, now Rochester, Hill. He explains how early land plots, burial ground records, and DAR efforts help modern residents stand where 18th‑century townspeople gathered, connecting today’s Rochester to its earliest civic and religious roots.

4. Give Back NH: Rochester Public Library (nhpr.org) — At Rochester Public Library, seniors are playing games on the lawn, teens are 3D‑printing in a historic room, and regulars say the space has become their “safe place.” Staff describe how children’s, teen, and adult programs—from Dungeons & Dragons to community puzzles—turn the library into “the heart of the community” for Rochester residents of all ages.

5. Rochester Museum of Fine Arts Presents Works by Paige Speight in the Bernier Room, Reception Planned on 10/3 (rochesternh.gov) — Rochester’s Museum of Fine Arts is showcasing “Titanic,” a new exhibition of paintings and ceramics by Paige Speight at the Bernier Room in the James W. Foley Memorial Community Center through November 6. Residents are invited to a public reception on October 3 from 1–3 p.m., with the show exploring Greek myth, personal stories, and what it means to be human.
