An officer on patrol yesterday swung into the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn and reportedly “observed a male and female acting suspiciously in the lot” and asked to speak with them, according to Capt. Joel Dolan of the Salem Police Department.

A check of the woman – Proffitt – yielded an active warrant from Pennsylvania.

“During the investigation, Proffitt led officers to her room which was occupied by three more people,” Dolan reported. “As officers were confirming the warrant, they engaged in conversation with the room occupants. Officers could also detect a strong odor of marijuana coming from the room.”

A consent search of the room led to “personal items belonging to people whom were not in the room” including items allegedly taken from a vehicle in Andover, MA, including debit cards, credit cards, checks, and a driver’s license, according to Dolan.

All five were arrested without incident, refused bail, and were held. They are scheduled to be arraigned today.

Dolan noted that all five were allegedly identified as members of the Felony Lane Gang, a loosely organized criminal outfit that has been targeting vehicles at fitness center, daycare centers, and supermarkets. He added most of the incidents have involved property crimes similar to what the five suspects allegedly had.
