Concentrating on the Road or Their Phone?

Think you have the talking and texting and driving thing down? You do not. Save a life—maybe even your own—and sign Oprah's No Phone Zone pledge.

When I first moved to Salem I used to drive to Waltham, Mass., every day for four years to Brandeis University where I was employed. Leaving my house at 6 a.m. to beat the morning rush I was always amazed how many people were having conversations on their cell phones.  I often thought, "Who could they be speaking with so early in the morning?"

Trying to make humor out of my daily drive I would consider the following; maybe the other woman or man who they could not speak with when home?

Even at 6 a.m. the traffic can be backed up so being behind someone conversing have you ever noticed you can sense the mood of the conversation by their hands motioning in all directions? When vicarious hand movement occurred I felt bad for the person on the other end.

Then you have the ones talking and driving at a snail’s pace in the far right passing lane. Approaching them too close you get the hand-motion "bye-byes" backwards, indicating you are on my rear end. I would just wave back.

Even driving around town, stopping at a red light, how many times does the person in front of you talking on their phone have no idea the light has turned green and the honks start blaring?

Talking in your car do you feel more private, and you can say whatever you want? Without the kids pulling at you or your husband interrupting the conversation throwing his two cents in? Whatever the reason I wish people would drive to their destination, park and then make your call.

We should take Oprah's No Phone Zone Pledge.

I pledge to make my car a No Phone Zone. Beginning right now, I will do my part to help put an end to distracted driving by committing to drive as responsibly as I can:
