It’s April! Spring is here (at least as far as the calendar is concerned!) and it is the month that holds my favorite day of the year….Earth Day! Officially, Earth Day is April 22nd. The day was officially created as Earth Day in 1970. In 1990 it went international as the day to focus on what you are doing as an individual to help protect the environment.
But really….EVERY DAY is Earth Day! It’s not a one day thing, it’s a way of life. Doing little things to help protect the planet like turning out your lights when you leave a room, biking to work in the good weather (where applicable of course!), recycling and so much more.
Since 1970, the month of April has been unofficially coined “Earth Month” as it is also the month where people are more prone naturally (pun intended!) to help out the planet by volunteering to clean up local parks to get them ready for the upcoming summer season, we start our spring plantings, we clean out the house and much more.

Last year I approached the Town of Salem and asked what it is we do here in Salem NH for Earth Day. The deer in the headlights look told me – not much! At least not on a big scale. But that was quickly remedied as we (myself and one other town employee) got together and coordinated the first annual Greater Salem Earth Day Expo that was held at the Salem High School on Earth Day 2012.
I set out to find out what other happenings are going on in and around the area. Turns out, we have a lot of “closet greenies” around here! There are many organizations who coordinate park cleanups, tree plantings, litter brigades and a host of other events that are somewhat publicized but still many people are not aware of them.
