We have a great opportunity on our hands, fellow citizens. We have a chance to bring more people to Salem and invest in our future in new and dynamic ways. In order to rise to this opportunity, we need to encourage towns, cities, and states putting forward every effort possible to make their schools and school districts the best possible.
Schooling is one of the leading factors for people to move to an area. Why? Areas with better schools have increased property values, so every member of the community benefits when newer, renovated schools are built. Higher standards of education and high success rates of schools are key factors in young families moving into a community, and with an influx of families, businesses will get more traffic and customers, and everyone benefits yet again. Schools are an investment in our community. If we can produce successful people and retain them in Salem, we will be all the better for it. Like any investment, education pays off for the investor.
Also, one specific reason for Salem: Right now, Salem business is booming. New stores are opening up, and businesses are employing more people in Salem every month. Unemployment is rare compared to the nation, and Salem has always been a pro-business town, and there is nothing wrong with that! I love a strong economy in our town, and I love the steps our town and state government has taken to ensure business has been successful. At the same time though, Salem must also become a pro-education town, or else education facilities in Salem will hold back Salem’s growth. We do not want Salem workers having families live in Windham or Derry to avoid Salem’s schools. We are better than that.

Finally, common sense must dictate into this argument as well. Better schools lead to more people, more people lead to more businesses, and both businesses and people lead to more money going towards the town. So, investment in education not only brings back returns through successful people, but it brings us dollar signs as well overtime.
